Viewing References That Cite Your Case or Statute

When you check a case or statute citation in KeyCite (see Checking a Document in KeyCite), you can view a list of references that cite the case or statute.

To view a list of documents that cite your case or statute, click Citing References.

Citing References for a Case

  • Negative citing cases are listed first. The remaining cases are listed next, categorized by depth of treatment. Administrative materials follow the cases. Secondary sources, such as ALR annotations and law review articles, are listed last.

  • Depth of treatment stars show the extent to which the citing case discusses the cited case. See KeyCite Depth of Treatment Stars for details.

  • A quotation mark (quotation mark) indicates that the citing case directly quotes the cited case.

Citing References for a Statute

References are listed in the following order: cases affecting the validity of a section, pending legislation, cases from USCA and state statute notes of decisions, cases that do not appear in notes of decisions, administrative materials, and secondary sources.
