Viewing Citing References from a Case Headnote

When you find a case (see Finding a Document), you can move directly from a headnote in the displayed case to the KeyCite result for the case, limited to citing references that discuss the legal issue summarized in the headnote.

To display citing references for a case that are limited to those that discuss the legal issue summarized in a headnote,

  1. While viewing the case, locate the headnote for which you would like to retrieve citing references.

  2. Click KeyCite this headnote.

The citing references for the case are displayed, limited to those that discuss the legal issue summarized in the headnote.

  • Negative citing cases are listed first. The remaining cases are listed next, categorized by depth of treatment. Administrative materials follow the cases. Secondary sources, such as ALR annotations and law review articles, are listed last.

  • Depth of treatment stars show the extent to which the citing case discusses the cited case. See KeyCite Depth of Treatment Stars for details.

  • The quotation mark (quotation mark) indicates that the citing case directly quotes the cited case.
