Finding a Document
You can retrieve a document if you know its citation, title, or docket number or if the document is referenced in a retrieved document or KeyCite result. To retrieve a document, do one of the following:
At the Home page, type the citation for the document you want to find in the Find this document by citation text box and click GO. For details about entering a citation, see Tips for Entering a Citation.
Note: To print the document as soon as it's retrieved, select the and Print check box.
At the Home page, click Find a Case by Title, type at least one party name, select a jurisdiction, and click GO. See Finding a Case by Title (Party Names) for details.
At the Home page, click Find a Case by Docket Number, type a docket number, select a jurisdiction, and click GO. See Finding a Case by Docket Number for details.
At the Home page, click Find a Brief by Title, type at least one party name of the case for which the brief was written, select a jurisdiction, and click GO. See Finding a Brief by Title (Party Names) for details.
At the Home page, click Find a Brief by Docket Number, type the docket number of the case for which the brief was written, select a jurisdiction, and click GO. See Finding a Brief by Docket Number for details.
At the Home page, click Find a Document Using a Citation Template, type citation information in the appropriate text boxes, and click GO. See Finding a Document Using a Citation Template for details.
Click a link for a referenced document in a retrieved document or KeyCite result.
If you are not already registered or signed on, you will be prompted to do so. Either your document or a list of documents matching your request is then displayed. If a list is displayed, you are not charged until you click a link to display a document.
To browse a retrieved case using headnotes, click a headnote number. You will jump to the beginning of the corresponding paragraph in the text. To return to the headnote, click the highlighted paragraph number in the text.
To access KeyCite information for a retrieved document, click the KeyCite status flag (if available) at the top of the document or click KeyCite this headnote from a case headnote. See Checking a Document in KeyCite and Viewing Citing References from a Case Headnote for details.
To print the document, click Print Doc. See Printing Documents for details.
To retrieve a document that is cited in the retrieved document, click its hypertext link.
If your Find request retrieved a list of documents, you can retrieve the next or previous document in the list by clicking a Doc arrow at the bottom of the displayed document.
