Tips for Entering a Citation

One method for retrieving a document or checking a document in KeyCite is to enter the citation for the document. Here are some tips:

  • If you do not know the citation format, you can use a citation template. See Finding a Document Using a Citation Template or Checking a Document in KeyCite Using a Citation Template for details.

  • To help you enter a citation for a state statute, view a list of citation examples for state statutes.

  • To help you enter a citation for international material, view a list of citation examples for international materials.

  • You can use parallel citations, e.g., 469 us 528 or 102 labcas 34633.

  • Generally, you do not need to use exact spacing or punctuation in the citation. For example, you can type 105 s. ct. 1005 or 105sct1005 and retrieve the same result.

  • If you enter a case citation using a page number other than that of the starting page, you will still retrieve the case or the KeyCite result for that case. For example, if you want to find or check the citation for United States v. Fleet Factors Corp., 901 F.2d 1550, but you type 901 f2d 1558, the starting page of the case or the KeyCite result for that case is displayed.
